5 Common Beginner Guitar Mistakes (And How to Fix Them)
2026-07-05
Every guitarist makes mistakes when starting out. Here are the 5 most common ones — and exactly how to fix them.
## 1. Not Tuning Before Every Practice
**The Mistake:** Playing an out-of-tune guitar trains your ear to accept wrong pitches. Even slightly off tuning makes chords sound bad and can be demoralizing.
**The Fix:** Use our free online Guitar Tuner or get a clip-on tuner. Tune EVERY time you pick up the guitar. Your ears will thank you.
## 2. Pressing Too Hard on Strings
**The Mistake:** Gripping the neck like you're holding on for dear life. This causes hand fatigue, slows chord changes, and can bend notes sharp.
**The Fix:** Press just hard enough for a clean note — no harder. Practice finding the minimum pressure needed. Your hands will last much longer.
## 3. Skipping Slow Practice
**The Mistake:** Trying to play everything at full speed immediately. This builds sloppy muscle memory that's hard to unlearn.
**The Fix:** Start at 60 BPM with a metronome. Only speed up when you can play cleanly at the current tempo. Slow practice = fast progress.
## 4. Ignoring the Pinky Finger
**The Mistake:** Using only index, middle, and ring fingers — ignoring the pinky. This limits your chord vocabulary and lead playing.
**The Fix:** Force yourself to use the pinky. Practice G major (uses ring on low E, pinky on high E). Play melodies that require all 4 fingers. It'll feel awkward for 2 weeks, then natural.
## 5. Not Using a Strap (Even While Sitting)
**The Mistake:** Balancing the guitar on your lap causes you to lean forward to see the fretboard — terrible posture that leads to back and neck pain.
**The Fix:** Use a strap even when sitting. Adjust it so the guitar stays in the same position whether standing or sitting. This builds consistent technique.
## Bonus: Not Recording Yourself
Record a video of your playing once a week. You'll notice mistakes you can't hear while playing — and you'll see your progress over time. It's incredibly motivating.
